Thread: Got no confirmed berth in train? Try current booking

How many times have you postponed your train journey because you didn’t get a confirmed berth? Next time, make sure to try the current reservation facility if your name doesn’t figure in the final list.

The railways finds that a large number of passengers are unaware of the facility that enables passengers with unconfirmed tickets to book afresh during a short window period between preparation of the passenger chart and departure of the train. This also helps people who have to travel long distance at short notice.

The current ticket booking can be made from the current counters at the station from where the train starts. “The facility can be availed only after the reservation charts of the train have been prepared and is open for a limited time before departure of the train,” the railways said in a press release.

A senior Southern Railway official said the service is an advantage to passengers who would be otherwise travelling on unreserved tickets. “Several berths fall vacant after the chart is prepared because of cancellations and when unused berths blocked under different quotas get released automatically,” he said.

After the preparation of reservation charts, some seats and berths are usually available. The reservation charts are normally prepared three to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train. In case of trains leaving during early morning hours, the charts are prepared the previous night.

P K Sargunan, a regular passenger from Chennai, said he was not aware of the current booking facility. He actually confused it with the usual reservation system which opens 90 days before the departure of the train. In Chennai Central station, the current booking counter is situated at the Moore Market Complex.

In important holiday, festival season the TATKKAL though a bit higher will be useful for sudden travel. This is available of course in selected trains. Current reservation, as such is useful to those who have travel at once, no time even to try tatkal and of course, depend on our luck. Anyway the facility provided by railways is welcome.
